What an opportunity ! Our class had a tour of UCO's Forensic Science Institute recently.
Such an amazing facility it is. Graduate and undergraduate spent the morning with us teaching us about forensic science.
They found out what we already knew and told us we were VERY smart. I certainly was impressed with the basic knowledge our class ALREADY had about forensic science before we EVEN got started. I think there are some real CSI pros in our classroom!!
On to the Evidence Bay where we made a science mind map about forensics. We got prizes too for our answers!!!
We viewed a Dragonfly video about how kids can use forensics in everyday life, including the situation where a birthday had been eaten by a mysterious individual prior to the actual party. Using forensics, the kids in the video found out the dog had eaten the cake!!!!!!
At the Mikrosil station, we saw how impressions of hands and feet are done. The material for the hand impressions looked like cauking but peeled off our hands in just about a minute. |
More Mikrosil impressions.....
Below is the dental stone casting for doing shoe molds. They used a material called bio foam for the mold and we each got a mold to keep.
At the fingerprinting station, we practiced making fingerprints and discovered that while all fingerprints are unique, all follow one of three patterns: arch, loop, or whorl.
Don't they look official?
Thanks so much to Roger and Jeannie Webb who made this field trip possible and kudos to the UCO students who instructed us. Yet another awesome memory from this school year. Thank you , God, for the countless opportunities our class has to learn EVERYDAY.
